Tony Ayres is one of Australia’s most prolific and award-winning showrunners, writers, and directors. He is one of the founding members of Matchbox Pictures, now owned by NBCU.
In 2018, Tony established his own production company Tony Ayres Productions (TAP), developing and producing feature films and television for global audiences and international marketplaces.
Tony executive produced, created, and co-wrote the critically acclaimed series, THE SURVIVORS (TAP/Netflix), based on best-selling author Jane Harper’s novel. The series reached #2 on the Netflix global streaming charts, ranked in the Top 10 in 85 countries, #1 in five countries and Top Five in territories including USA, UK, Canada and Australia. THE SURVIVORS was also nominated for an Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award.
Previously, Tony executive produced and co-wrote the hit miniseries CLICKBAIT (TAP/Netflix), nominated for Best Drama Series at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards. Tony also executive produced the miniseries FIRES (TAP/ABC), which won the AACTA Award for Best Miniseries or Telefeature and the TV Week Silver Logie Award for Most Outstanding Miniseries or Telemovie.
Tony’s recent releases have followed on from the great success of STATELESS (Matchbox Pictures/ABC), a miniseries starring Cate Blanchett that Tony executive produced and wrote. STATELESS was the winner of Best Miniseries or Telefeature at the AACTA Awards.
Tony was an executive producer on CREAMERIE (Kevin&Co/SBS), WANTED (Matchbox Pictures/Netflix), GLITCH (Matchbox Pictures/Netflix), and THE FAMILY LAW (Matchbox Pictures/SBS), and produced miniseries BARRACUDA (Matchbox Pictures/ABC), and SEVEN TYPES OF AMBIGUITY (Matchbox Pictures/ABC).
Tony also executive produced OLD SCHOOL (Matchbox Pictures), and the contemporary reimagining of DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND (Matchbox Pictures).
Tony created and executive produced NOWHERE BOYS (Matchbox Pictures/ABC) and the telemovie based on the series, NOWHERE BOYS: THE BOOK OF SHADOWS (2016). The series is internationally-acclaimed, winning the AACTA for Best Children’s Television Series, a Logie Award, a Prix Jeunesse International Award, and a nomination for a Children’s BAFTA Award.
Tony’s other television credits include THE SLAP (Matchbox Pictures/ABC) and its US remake, UNDERGROUND: THE JULIAN ASSANGE STORY (Matchbox Pictures/NBCU), THE STRAITS (Matchbox Pictures/ABC), and SAVED (2009).
Tony’s first feature film, WALKING ON WATER (2002), won the Teddy Award at Berlin, and five AFI awards. His second feature, THE HOME SONG STORIES (2007), premiered at Berlin and won 24 Australian and international awards, including eight AFI Awards. His third feature, CUT SNAKE (2014), premiered at Toronto, and screened at Edinburgh.
