Robert Connolly has had a career in film and television spanning over twenty years.
His film directing credits include MAGIC BEACH (2024) and FORCE OF NATURE (2024), for which Robert received the ADG Award for Best Direction of a Feature Film, as well as BLUEBACK (2022), based on the Tim Winton novella of the same name, which premiered at Sundance.
Robert also directed the highly successful film THE DRY (2020), which won the Australian Writers’ Guild (AWGIE) Award for Best Feature Film Adaptation.
The film was nominated for Best Film and Best Direction, and won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.
It was also nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor at the Film Critics Circle of Australia. Robert was further nominated for Best Direction of a Feature Film at the Australian Directors Guild (ADG) Awards.
Robert was the executive producer on the AACTA Award-winning documentary CHASING ASYLUM (2016), and the contemporary Aboriginal movement and dance-based feature, SPEAR (2015).
He also curated THE TURNING (2013), a unique cinema event which featured the work of seventeen Australian directors from diverse artistic disciplines, adapted from the book by Tim Winton. THE TURNING premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in and enjoyed a gala screening at Berlin International Film Festival.
Robert wrote and directed features including THE BANK (2001), THREE DOLLARS (2005), BALIBO (2009) and PAPER PLANES (2014), and produced THE BOYS (1998), THE MONKEY’S MASK (2000), ROMULUS, MY FATHER (2007) and ACCUTE MISFORTUNE (2018).
Robert’s films have received numerous awards and screened at key festivals internationally, including Toronto, San Sebastian, Montreal, Berlin and London Film Festivals.
His television directing credits include DEEP STATE (Endor Productions), BARRACUDA (Matchbox Pictures/ABC), THE SLAP (Matchbox Pictures/ABC), RUSH (Southern Star) and UNDERGROUND: THE JULIAN ASSANGE STORY (Matchbox Pictures). His television producing credits include THE WARRIORS (Arenamedia) and GALLIPOLI (Nine Network).
