Mithila Gupta is an Indian-born, Aussie-bred creator, writer and executive producer. She recently created and was showrunner on the hit romantic drama FOUR YEARS LATER (SBS). Made with Easy Tiger Productions, FOUR YEARS LATER stars Shahana Goswami and Akshay Ajit Singh. It is the first ever Australian-Indian television series and was filmed across both countries. The series won Bronze at the New York Film and Television awards in the drama division and was nominated in 2025 for an Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award and Screen Producers Australia (SPA) Award for Best Miniseries. It has since been acquired by CBC and Lionsgate Play internationally.

Mithila also created and wrote all nine episodes of comedy series DESI DOWN UNDER for Audible India. The series stars Adarsh Gaurav and Prajakta Koli. Recently, Mithila wrote on the upcoming drama series THE AIRPORT CHAPLAIN (Wooden Horse/ SBS), starring Hugo Weaving and Shabana Azeez, and previously wrote on two seasons of BUMP (Stan/The CW/BBC) and four seasons of FIVE BEDROOMS (Paramount+/Peacock/BBC). Mithila was head writer on THE UNLISTED (ABC/Netflix), which garnered the prestigious International Youth Jury Prize at the 2020 Prix Jeunesse Awards. She wrote several episodes, including the pilot.

Mithila has also written on international hits DOCTOR DOCTOR (Nine/AcornTV); THE HEIGHTS (ABC/BBC); PLAYING FOR KEEPS (Ten); WINNERS AND LOSERS, HOME AND AWAY, TOYBOX (Seven); and TRIP FOR BISCUITS (ABC). She also worked as the assistant script editor on gripping sci-fi CLEVERMAN (ABC/AMC). She started her career in the story room of Australia’s longest running drama, NEIGHBOURS (Ten/Channel 5) where she introduced an Indian family to the previously all white cast.

In the US, Mithila developed a series adaptation of Alka Joshi’s THE HENNA ARTIST, co-showrunning with Dee Johnson for Netflix with Miramax and Frieda Pinto attached. She has also developed a juicy thriller set in NYC with The J’s (THE AMERICANS) and has also developed with Berlanti.

Mithila is currently developing a slate of projects, including a romcom feature film adaptation of DESI DOWN UNDER, juicy crime thriller THUGS with Easy Tiger, and the screen adaptation of Shankari Chandran’s award winning novel CHAI TIME AT CINNAMON GARDENS, on which she is attached to write and executive produce. She is also developing projects with production companies such as Goalpost, Lingo, Wooden Horse and Jungle.

Mithila passionately aspires to diversify the Australian television industry, both in front of and behind the camera. She mentors several emerging writers and is a founding member of the Australian Writer’s Guild’s first ever Diversity and Inclusion committee. Recently, she joined the board of inclusive production company Co-Curious and helped run the Diaspora Story Lab for South Asian writers.
