Jon BellScreenwriter | Director

Jon Bell is one of the most experienced Indigenous Screenwriters in Australia.

His feature horror, THE MOOGAI (2024), debuted at Sydney Film Festival (SFF), winning the Audience Award for Best Feature, premiered globally at Sundance Film Festival, and won the prestigious CinefestOZ Film Prize Award. Jon developed the script from his short film THE MOOGAI (2020) with Causeway Films and No Coincidence Media.

His television credits include THE WARRIORS (ABC) and CLEVERMAN (ABC), which won a Screen Producers Australia (SPA) Award for Best Drama, as well as being nominated for an Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award for Best Television Series. He also wrote for READY FOR THIS (Blackfella Films/Werner Film Productions), which earned an International Emmy Kids Award nomination, a Logie Award for Most Outstanding Comedy Program and an AACTA Award for Best Children’s Television Series.

Jon created and wrote the drama series THE GODS OF WHEAT STREET (Every Cloud Productions), which won a SPA Award for Miniseries of the Year, and wrote for both seasons of REDFERN NOW (ABC), which earned a Silver Logie Award for Most Outstanding Drama Series. Jon wrote an episode of RFDS (EndemolShine/Seven Network), which was nominated for a Logie Award for Most Popular Drama Series, and a TV Week Silver Logie Award for Most Outstanding Drama Program.

Jon has written and directed several shorts including THE MOOGAI, which won the Midnight Shorts category at SXSW, Best Horror Short at LA International Shorts Festival and the Erwin Rado Award for Best Australian Short Film at Melbourne International Film Festival. THE MOOGAI was nominated for an Australian Writers’ Guild (AWGIE) Award and won Best Director (Shorts) at Brooklyn Horror Festival. THE CHUCK IN (2012) screened at SFF and ImagiNative Film Festival. His other short film credits include TWO BIG BOYS (2007) and AND JUSTICE FOR ONE (2003).
