Garry Phillips, ACSCinematographer

Garry Phillips is a critically acclaimed and highly experienced Director of Photography, shooting some of Australia’s most iconic works of film and television.

Garry recently shot the highly anticipated feature film SPIT directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, and starring David Wenham, set for release in 2025. Throughout his career, Garry has been recognised multiple times by the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (AACTA) and the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS).

Garry began his career as a focus puller and camera assistant for noted Australian DOPs including Russell Boyd ACS ASC, Dean Semler ACS ASC, David Gribble ACS and Garry Wapshott, among others. He then progressed to shooting iconic Australian feature films including GETTIN’ SQUARE, CANDY, THE RAILWAY MAN, THE MONKEY’S MASK, BETTER THAN SEX, BURNING MAN, and KID SNOW. For his work on THE RAILWAY MAN, Garry was the recipient of Australia’s highest cinematography honour; The Milli Award, Cinematographer of the Year & The Golden Tripod Award at the ACS Awards, and a nominee of Best Cinematography in a Motion Picture at the AACTAs.

Garry is also prolific in the television space. He was the Director of Photography for all four seasons of the critically acclaimed series TOTAL CONTROL (Blackfella Films / ABC). Garry was also the Director of Photography for ONE NIGHT (Easy Tiger / Paramount+), YEAR OF (Roadshow Rough Diamond / Stan), IRREVERENT (Matchbox Pictures / Netflix), THE END (See-Saw Films / Foxtel), PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (Fremantle / Amazon), BUMP (Easy Tiger / Stan), SECRET CITY (Matchbox Pictures / Netflix), and JACK IRISH (Easy Tiger / ABC). Garry won the Best Cinematography AACTA Award for his work on PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, and a Best Cinematography nominee for his work on BUMP.

Garry has also shot acclaimed international series including A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES (Bad Wolf / SKY UK), INDIAN SUMMERS (New Pictures / Channel 4), and THE MISSING (Company Pictures / Starz).
