Vee ShiScreenwriter | Director

Vee Shi is a filmmaker who was raised in China and is now based in Melbourne. He studied Interior Design and Product Design before pursuing a career in filmmaking and enrolling in the Advanced Diploma of Professional Screenwriting at RMIT, where he was awarded the Erin Thomas Award for Most Enterprising Student 2022. His short films have screened at over 20+ international film festivals. His latest short film Jia was the winning project of AACTA: Pitch Focus competition in association with Sony, and the winner of Best Direction and Best Actor in an Australian Short Film at Flickerfest 2023. JIA also garnered Vee a 2023 Australian Directors Guild nomination for Best Direction in a Student Film. Vee was selected for the 2022 Co-Curious’ Stories from Another Australia Victoria workshop and the MIFF Accelerator Lab 2023.  Vee previously worked as an Associate Producer under the mentorship of Michael McMahon at Big and Little Films Pty Ltd, supported by VicScreen’s Key Talent in a Company Placement. As of July 2023, he has assumed the role of a Development Executive.

Vee’s current fascination lies in emotionally rich narratives, particularly within the realms of high-concept lo-fi sci-fi and magical realism, exploring themes of love, sex, and identity against the contemporary backdrop of the technological era, a setting he finds simultaneously liberating, overwhelming, and intimidating. Another theme that consistently finds its way into Vee’s stories is the dynamics of mother-son relationships, likely influenced by his own life where his mother stands as an unsung hero and a significant source of inspiration.
