Robert Connolly has a career in film and television spanning over twenty years. His television directing credits include Deep State, Fox Networks 8-part espionage thriller starring Mark Strong; Barracuda, for which he received a 2017 ADG nomination for Best Direction in a TV Miniseries; The Slap; Rush; and Underground: The Julian Assange Story, which he also wrote. His television producing credits include The Warriors and Gallipoli.                               

Robert’s most recent film is Blueback, based on the Tim Winton novella of the same name, slated to premiere at Sundance in 2023. Robert directed the highly successful 2021 film The Dry. The Dry won the 2021 AWGIE award for best feature film adaptation. The film was nominated Best Film at the 2021 AACTA awards, and Best Direction at the AACTA’s, as well as being nominated Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor at the Film Critics Circle of Australia. The Dry won Best Adapted Screenplay at the AACTA’s. Robert was further nominated for Best Direction of a Feature Film at the ADG awards. Robert is currently working on the sequel for The Dry, Force of Nature. Robert will write, direct and produce Force of Nature for Made Up Stories.

Robert was the executive producer on AACTA Award-winning documentary Chasing Asylum, and the contemporary Aboriginal movement and dance-based feature, Spear. He co-wrote, produced and directed Paper Planes, and curated The Turning, a unique cinema event which featured the work of seventeen Australian directors from diverse artistic disciplines, adapted from the book by Tim Winton. The Turning premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2013 and enjoyed a gala screening at Berlin International Film Festival. Robert wrote and directed feature films The BankThree Dollars and Balibo, and produced The BoysThe Monkey’s Mask and Romulus, My Father. Robert’s films have received numerous awards and screened at key festivals internationally, including the Toronto, San Sebastian, Montreal, Berlin and London Film Festivals.
