Michael LucasScreenwriter | Executive Producer

Michael Lucas is a multi-award-winning screenwriter. He made his debut with the indie feature comedy, Not Suitable For Children, directed by Peter Templeman. Released in 2012, it was selected to open the Sydney Film Festival, was nominated for five Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards and won Michael the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Original Feature Film Screenplay.

Moving into television, Michael became a core writer and then script producer on Network Ten’s award-winning series Offspring. He wrote 17 episodes across five seasons, winning two AWGIEs for Best Television Screenplay. In 2014, Michael created, wrote and co-produced the critically acclaimed Endemol miniseries Party Tricks for Network Ten. Following this he was a core writer and storyliner on the fourth season of the hit Foxtel series Wentworth, for which he was nominated for an Australian Writer’s Guild Award (AWGIE) for his episode ‘Plan Bea’. Michael script edited Rosehaven (ABC), wrote for the Network Ten drama Sisters and wrote for two seasons of the comedy/drama The Wrong Girl for Playmaker Media, for which he was nominated for an AWGIE for episode 3.

More recently, Michael produced the highly successful series The Newsreader. The Newsreader won the AACTA for Best Drama Series, with two episodes written and co-written by Michael nominated for AACTAs for Best Screenplay in Television. The Newsreader also won the 2022 TV Week Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Drama Program and was nominated for the 2022 Logie for Most Popular Drama Program. Season two of The Newsreader released in 2023 won the AACTA award for Best Drama Series and the SPA award for Drama Series Production of the Year. Michael has co-created and co-executive produced three seasons of the Paramount Plus/Network 10 drama Five Bedrooms alongside Christine Bartlett. In 2021, an episode of Five Bedrooms Michael co-wrote with Christine Bartlett was nominated for an AWGIE Award for Best Television Screenplay. The series was nominated for Best Comedy Program in the 2022 AACTA Awards. The fourth season of Five Bedrooms was released in 2023 and received an AACTA nomination for Best Comedy Program.
