Matthew Saville is an award-winning director for film and television. Matthew is directing for the upcoming series Black Snow (Goalpost Pictures/Sundance TV), slated to be released in 2023. His television credits include miniseries Upright, starring Tim Minchin, which earned him an Australian Director’s Guild (ADG) Award for Best Direction in a TV Comedy Series in 2020. Matthew directed the acclaimed ABC drama Rake, and Friday on My Mind, a miniseries based on Australian band The Easybeats, for which he received an ADG Award nomination for Best Direction of a TV Miniseries.

In 2016 Matthew directed season four of Please Like Me, Josh Thomas’ multi-award-winning comedy series for the ABC recently listed on the 2019 The New York Times list of Best International TV Shows of the Decade. The fifth episode of which, ‘Burrito Bowl’, earned Matthew a 2017 ADG Award for Best Direction in a TV Comedy Program. Matthew also directed the first three series of Please Like Me, and won the ADG Award for Best Direction in both 2014 and 2015 for his episodes ‘Portuguese Custard Tarts’ and ‘Scroggin’. His other television credits include Seven Types of Ambiguity, The Future is Expensive, and acclaimed mini-series Cloudstreet and The Slap – Matthew’s episode ‘Harry’ was awarded an AACTA for Best Direction in Television. He also directed Tangle; Chris Lilley’s cult hit series We Can Be Heroes, The King (based on the life of comic genius Graham Kennedy, which won three AFI Awards), The Surgeon, and East of Everything.

Matthew wrote, directed and produced his feature film A Month of Sundays, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015. His feature Felony also premiered at Toronto two years earlier, while Noise, Matthew’s first feature, premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for nine AFI Awards including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Director. Noise was voted Best Australian Film by the Australian Film Critics’ Association, and won six Film Critics’ Circle of Australia Awards, including Best Direction and Best Film.
