Christiaan Van Vuuren is one of the creators, writers and directors of the multi-platform comedy series Soul Mates, which premiered on ABC2 in 2014 and moved to ABC1 in 2015. Soul Mates is a spin-off of the successful webseries Bondi Hipsters which Christiaan co-created with Nick Boshier, for which he won an ADG Award for Best Direction in an Original Online Project in 2013, and whose YouTube channel has hosted in excess of 8.5 million views. Soul Mates follows two friends who are continually drawn together across the course of human history: as prehistoric cavemen, as 1980s Kiwi Assassins, and as the Bondi Hipsters. Soul Mates II, the second series, screened on ABC and ABC iView in 2016, and resulted in Christiaan receiving an ADG Award nomination for Best Direction in a TV or SVOD Comedy Program. Both Christiaan and Nick won the 2014 GQ Award for Comedians of the Year.
Christiaan originally decided to move into filmmaking after being told he had tuberculosis and would be confined to a hospital room for six months. This inspired his first video Life in Quarantine, by The Fully Sick Rapper, which garnered over one million YouTube views. Following the success of this video, Christiaan went on to produce a series for YouTube that gained him global celebrity on the site. Teaming up with his brother Connor Van Vuuren, Christiaan later won the ONE80PROJECT, adapting their idea into a telemovie entitled SICK!, which aired on MTV in 2012. The Van Vuuren brothers are also currently in development on the series adaptation of SICK!, as well as several other television projects. He has most recently worked on Jungle series Squinters and Sando as director, and Foxtel’s new comedy series The Slot as host, director and performer. The series featured prominent Australian Youtube stars and comedians and screened on FOX8. He is currently developing several television projects, and comedy-horror feature Croak with his brother Connor, to be produced by Chloe Rickard for Jungle and Bridget Callow-Wright for Midwinter Films. Croak follows a misfit band of teenagers as they struggle to defeat a giant mutant cane toad plaguing their town, and the corrupt mining company that created it. The Van Vuuren Bros have recently received Skip Ahead funding forthe development of their new webseries Over and Out.
Christiaan directed on the comedy series The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide to Knife Fighting for the ABC and Jungleboys, the webseries Skit Box and Eastern Suburbs Mums, and the viral Skit Box video Activewear. He has also written and directed content for brands including Old Spice, McDonalds, Vittoria, AMEX, Cadbury, Coca Cola, and Sony.
Christiaan was in miniseries Stag for the BBC, and recently featured in television series Top Of The Lake: China Girl and Ben Elton’s feature Three Summers.
